MLS to become a Top 5 league in 10 years! | The Messi Effect

Lionel Messi has arrived in MLS but even prior to his arrival the league was growing.
We brought along @11Yanks, Brett Oppenheim & Jason Oppenheim to discuss:
Will Major League Soccer ever become a top 5 League in the World?
Will the Massive Spending of the Saudi Pro League Hurt the Growth of MLS?
Let’s debate that.

  1. Great episode! Great job.
Messi is in fact exposing the weakness of MLS defenses.
Hopefully you can do a follow up after Miami wins US Open Cup or after MLS Cup

  2. I think the world club World Cup is another reason for the MLS to hurry up and raise the salary cap. Cuz you really don’t want to have your clubs get blown off the field in your own country every match.

I think salary caps (and floors) are so so good for leagues cuz they keep thing’s competitive, but the next step is absolutely to raise that number to an amount that lets your teams compete on a world stage, maybe not with elite champions league teams right away, but to where your clubs would be a legit foe to regular clubs in Europe or South America.

  3. Do you know what is the problem with the American and European academies and why all South America outperform them in young talent?
The problem is in the ambition of the European or American academy player. Everything is available to him, services and jobs, and many things that make him and that leaving football will find work elsewhere, unlike players in South America or Africa. The goal is to be a player who does not have another chance to get a Money to help himself and his family, so if you check 99% of the star players in all sports come from poor neighborhoods, this is the truth.

  4. MLS doesn’t have to be a top 5 league in the world for people to love and watch it. It’s already a super entertaining league, just watch and appreciate it for what it is. Nonetheless it will grow much more in the coming years.

  5. To be TOP 5 you have to be better than other leagues and that is only viable at club and national team level alike. To be TOP 5 you must become a football power and that means competing on an equal footing and beating clubs and national teams from UEFA and CONMEBOL. Honestly, you being CONCACAF are light years away from that level because your confederation is of a lower level in all aspects. Greetings from Argentina.

  6. None of these three kid’s here never lived through Maradona and Pele era and they are actually sitting here confidently expressing their expert analysis 😂😂

  7. Why are we so fixated on this arbitrary numerical distinction? There are tons of countries in the world outside of the so-called top 5 where soccer is the national sport. Turkey, Netherlands, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil. We should be striving to develop the sport to the level that it we see in these places. Having more and more successful clubs throughout the pyramid is the way to get there.

If we achieve that in a country the size of the US, we'll easily be in the conversation for having the best league in the world.

  8. Brazilian flare can be found in this country and it's being performed in the public parks in South Florida by talented young Haitian American Kids that these Academy have no incentive in bringing into their structured system. You can thank pay-to-play for that tragedy. Go and see it for yourself. They've got all the athleticism and technical ability in the world.

  9. Negative on MLS relegation, b/c of it is still a young & developing league to reach almost 30 yrs existence. MLS team owners, who invested heavily to pay entrance & league fees rather not place a relegation as a major financial loss. Also, MLS is not there yet to finance & raise for reserve players' minimum salaries as UEFA due to its long existence of beyond 100 yrs. MLS value competition will be like Euro Leagues of Basketball & Ice Hockey upon talent comparison. UEFA value competition will always be like NBA & NHL as top talents & best players of the sport.

  10. Can you contrast what you're doing with Messi and Miami with the debacle going on in Toronto with Insigne (and Fede to a lesser extent)… I'm wondering if you see anything going on with Toronto FC's "team culture"… Bernadeschi and Insigne are accomplished in similar ways to Messi, not at his level, but they share the same stage.. I can't understand how things have gone so wrong in Toronto… What is happening in Miami with the arrival of Messi (and Busquets + Jordi Alba) should have happened to Toronto FC with the arrival of Insigne (and Bernardeschi + Criscito)… Why such an opposite tale of two cities?

  11. Naming Messi as the second best player of all time is a courageous take for an analyst/pundit. It is also correct.

People who know Pelé only from grainy, low quality film clips will disagree. But in terms of achievement, goals scored, quality relative to contemporary talent, and importance to the game on a global scale, Pelé is easily the greatest.

I can fill pages detailing exactly why this is the case. Messi fans will have none of it and will never be convinced. That's fine. But, they're wrong.

  12. Non Muslims can’t go to Mecca or Medina because they are considered the worst of creatures, filthy, pigs and monkeys. Shame on any Christian that would debase themselves playing there.

  13. It's not the Messi effect or that the MLS will suddenly create a salary structure that will leap the league forward. It's the Saudi Arabia effect. Saudi (and maybe the Emirates or Qatar) are in the process of stripping the top European leagues bare of all of their stars. So Saudi and maybe one other will be top 5. Meanwhile, the top European leagues will come back to the pack. The top teams in those leagues will no longer stand head and shoulders above everyone else as they won't have the top stars to do it. Also, as those leagues lose their stars, they will also lose a truckload of TV revenue thus spiraling them backward even further. In ten years the EPL, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 are all going to go backwards big time without their stars and the negative feedback loop that will create. That will make leagues like the MLS much more competitive. Not to mention that the Messi effect and the '26 World Cup should finally vault the MLS to another level or two higher as the added interest will create a positive feedback loop.

  14. i think 10 years is a good guess. I know many coaches and owners in the english system have said they need to switch to a salary cap system if they want the leagues to be more competitive in england. Because lets be honest, the english system is literally whoever can spend/has the most money is going to be competitive. The only way to get all teams on the same field is to put a salary cap like the MLS. Yeah it has its flaws and needs to be worked on, the MLS is one of the most competitive leagues in terms of every team having a shot.

When you get to the english system, especially top tier. Only 5-6 teams have a shot at winning the league and even then after the first couple of months its usually narrowed down to 2-3.

  15. A 25M cap will make us the 6th/7th best league in the world. I say MLS go all out for the Club World Cup. Raise to that, plus work with Adidas and Nike to bring in top stars signed to them.

  16. MLS is so lucky with the coming of Messi. All of the world now watch MLS. I never know MLS before, but know have to watch MLS game everyday. MLS must honestly admit without Messi, MLS is nothing. Messi is bigger than MLS, even maybe compare to soccer itself 😂

  17. We definitely need to start driving on the left, using metric more often, wearing trainers and jumpers, and eating crisps for MLS to EVER be a serious league!!! I think I've left my brolly in the boot mate!

  18. Pete said that it is kind of like Messi is exposing MLS. I don't really think so. I mean, he's been doing this sort of thing everywhere he's gone, against some of the best teams. I think there are other high profile players that can come to MLS and do well, but not tear it up like Messi.

  19. These guys want MLS to become a top 5 league and get foreign players in their prime but in other videos they want the US domestic players to go to Europe asap to develop and play in top leagues and UCL 😂 How can MLS become a top league if you all want domestic players to leave asap without even playing in MLS or even reaching their prime here? And if by any chance domestic players do stay in MLS these same guys call them "MLS lifers", "not challenging themselves at the highest level" 😂 Can't make this up!

  20. Imagine with Messi at Miami and had CR7 joined LAFC/ LA Galaxy it would have boosted MLS popularity by miles. With the US co-hosting 2026 World Cup, 2025 Club World Cup and 2024 Copa America, football is the US can grow exponentially.

10 years from now, MLS has the potential to be one of the best leagues in the Americas. Issues that prevent MLS from growing is the US pay to play system, overlooking talent from the streets, not sending young players to Europe to develop properly, and there’s no promotion/relegation in the league which makes it far less competitive from European leagues. Adapting a pro/relegation system would bring in more competition which translates to better quality in players.

  21. I think the Club World Cup in the USA could have a big impact on club support if MLS could get more participants to earn their slots than just the Seattle Sounders ("host slot TBD" does not count as an earned slot). But as of right now, MLS sides can't seem to win the continental trophy and they get just one more shot at it. We need more representation in 2025, and this is coming from a Sounders fan.

  22. You are watching the maximum growth potential of the Saudi League. Their ceiling is throwing money at household names looking for a massive short-term contract. They will not be able to compete with the American domestic market nor the potential international appeal of a successful American league. Their revenue is currently half that of MLS and all of these massive Saudi contracts are coming from very wealthy patrons. It's not sustainable because the return won't match the investment. Then when you take into account things like player development, sports infrastructure, geographic location, quality of life, and cultural appeal, there is no reason the Saudi League should be in a conversation about future top leagues.
