Discussion on racism in football with Thierry Henry, Micah Richards & Christina Unkel | CBS Sports

After Romelu Lukaku was given a second yellow card in Inter’s matchup against Juventus at the weekend, in reaction to virulent racism from the Old Ladies fans, he celebrated in the same manner after scoring against Benfica in the UCL with no card given.

Thierry Henry, Micah Richards, Christina Unkel and Alessandro Del Piero discuss racism in football, in Italy and what (if any) solution there will be to fight it in the football world.

  1. You can tell Titi was reliving some memories. I get it. Back when I used to play basketball, hearing the craziest racist comments from the fans in the stands was normal. I mostly blocked it out. But you’re human, it gets to you. You’re just trying to play a game you love and compete, and some ppl use the thing you love as an excuse to dehumanize you. Then you end up feeling like an idiot because you’re ultimately forced to tolerate it and still perform for their entertainment. It can be a difficult situation.

  2. Going to the point that Del Piero is Making or trying to make:

Here is my opinion on the Racism issue

The black man or dark skin Man ( or Woman ) is regarded less by the White skin Man and then the white skins they have chants, or animal likeness to back it up – Monkey and monkey chants, throwing a Banana, calling someone black in a derogatory way etc.

The black man or dark skin Man ( or community ) say in the stadium or in life in general don't have that kind of power or interest to target a white skin person and hurl offensive "white colored" insult at them.

The problem of racism has a root cause that has not been reached.
The root is way way deep.

  3. Football is so racist, we have one Caucasian guy on the panel. BLM ran the British football for a few seasons had everyone kneeling while they bought mansions in America. A small number of racist people like football, football fans don't like racist 👍🏻

  4. I want to see the ref protecting the players, stop the game, take the players off the field and get sections of the crowd cleared before the game will continue and the players come back out. Yes it will punish people not making chants and comments, but they’re as guilty for not keeping it in check and stopping the vile behaviour of people around them. Teach it’s not ok to say what’s being said, but letting it happen, without comment or action is also not ok.

  5. No one mentioned the divisiveness from the media, corporations and football federations. Del Piero came close by saying we have so much in our society that divides us. Football is the same. To one it's an enjoyable game and to another it's a tribal war. It's all about educated and the ignorant. All this virtue signalling doesn't help the matter, it doesn't fix racism bending a knee and wearing armbands. It only exacerbates the issue giving power and reason to more people on the right who probably feel disenfranchised by the stuff their government and newspapers are now spreading.
As a moderate, logical and empathic person I can see where both sides are just product of the systems they serve and media they consume. Education is the field where the answer will be found, in action rather than words.

  6. Footballers should take a stand on each side and sit down on the pitch when racist abuse is being chanted. If you pay to watch 22 men sit on grass for 90 minutes then racist abuse will soon come to an end.

  7. This happened to Ibra as well. He got a yellow card for celebrating after scoring against Roma, when the fans of Roma insulted him for the whole game, calling him gypsy!

  8. Those are typical Italians, they just elected a right winger prime Minister, they chased away the only black player in Mario. They all should wear kkk outfits.

  9. before I lose my 'u now what' here. That's where I knew Henry had already lost it, with good reason too – having LIVED THE LIFE and EXPERIENCED this FIRSTHAND. it must have brought back some 'interesting' times in his time in the BEAUTIFUL GAME

  10. I've just got into football / soccer within the last 6 months. Even B4 then I heard that Italian football crowds are notorious for the level of deepseeded racism and acts in the crowd. What dumb founded me was that two of the biggest teams entrust the keeping of their goals to Black Men. It's like if you don't like us, why do you still want our participation, seek our skill set and talent? Your biggest stars are Black Men, yet your favorite dog to kick is also talented Black Men. White supremacy is a damaging to the holder, this hatred arena from being told that you are genetically superior, yet you watch these fabulous specimens exhibit Superior skill and intelligence, and the common man thinks I've got to save face, protect my ego, because mama and papa food me that I was superior just as I am. Literally allowing racists and their potential for egotistical violent retribution hold the game hostage, and punish a man being treated inhumane for stoically claiming a small victory. Stop asking the villains for help heros.

  11. RACISM IS A HOAX !!! HAVE YOU EVER SEEN Thierry or other most black players dated . . . . a black women??
who is a racist then. . Thierry or the Fans??. . you will be the judge. . . commen sense !! . . Hypocrites at their table!!

  12. I noticed Christina address the situation first as a refree, so i feel as if she tried to stay nutrual and not say something that would make her a target amongst referees . Kate presented her with the same question but asked her to talk about it outside of being a referee . That was smartly done, to give her

  13. I think it's rather simple to solve. Give out harsh punishments to the clubs and i mean harsh in that it is gonna hurt A LOT. Subtract points, close the stadium for a hurting amount of time, force the clubs to take serious action like identifying those people and never let them in your stadium for the rest of their lives.

I know it might be a bad example, but remember when the Premier league removed the nets and the fences in their stadiums with the active hooligan scene that was around in these days and they said "only ONE incident happens and the nets and fences will be brought back" and it worked out so well.

Im german and racism is a special subject for us and myself, since racism brought our country to the brink of extinction. There can only be zero tolerance for racism. Unfortunately beside the pictures and the armband there is actually no zero tolerance in place. Double-standards are in place, because the clubs and the football associations of the individual countries weigh money more than fighting effectively against racism.

  14. The fact that Thierry Henry and Micah Richards, some of the most positive and smiling people on this planet are not smiling for a millisecond during this conversation. It shows how severe and how actual the racism in football still is today. Not only in Italy, but in all countries and in all competitions.

  15. It's jaw breaking how many people didn't get what Del Piero was trying to say here and are even implying he was being racist himself while also describing him as "your typical Italian" which is ironic cause that's a racist thing to do.

It is true Italy did many step forward towards this topic, hell 20 years ago the stadiums were chanting racial slurs on a daily basis and to prevent the fans to show up to the next game was unheard of for the Italian federation as was for any kind of fines being issued.
