  1. Thanks for the analysis, keeping it short and sweet, keeping your eye on the big picture (almost qualified), and being critical, but still positive.

  2. I didn't even think about the ref, but you're correct. Carding a MEX player for diving at home is a seismic event that I haven't heard anyone else mention as a conference shaping event.

  3. I'm feeling good about the results, but it also feels like a missed opportunity for a historic win that probably doesn't matter much for qualifying.

  4. The Mexicans keep saying that the US did not have their best team. I disagree. Just because some other good players were absent it does not mean that the one's that played were not the best.

  5. Nah, gonna have to disagree on Zimmerman. He and MR were abysmal with their passes out the back and many times he cleared the ball away, ceding possession when the better option would've been to recycle possession. Just not capable of playing good passes and as a CB he needs to do better. 1v1 defending isn't the entire picture.

Not a horrible CB but we aint going to do much in Qatar with CBs who cant pass.

  6. The one miss in this analysis is that Steffen had some amazing saves and is a focused and physical presence on the field who has a rare ability to be both energizing and calming in his play. Zack Steffen should be the USMNT goalie.

  7. Agree that one point was huge. With a win on Sunday Panama it would be hard to see them finish in the top 3. The best CR could do (25 pts) is tie with the US on points but a 9 vs 2 goal difference will be very difficult for them but it’s Concacaf and anything can happen

  8. A draw against Panama and Costa Rica both guarantees we are in. And yes I say guarantees because CR would have to score like 8 goals in their next game to surpass us.

  9. You touched on one of my two biggest issues with Berhalter as a manager. He plays guys out of position, which also consequently makes his rosters appear strange and unbalanced at certain positions, often playing someone out of position when a Joe Scaly for example is playing well and available and despite being down your 1st choice in Dest gets left out.

  10. You make a strong point on the officiating. I thought the referee did a great job of managing the match without interfering with its flow.

Like many, I would have been pleased with a draw prior to the match. But, I'm still baffled that both Pulisic's and Pefok's chances didn't ripple the net.

I'm a minority opinion holder on the topic of Berhalter. I know he's a favorite punching bag amongst self appointed experts and YouTube commenters. I will also admit that he has fielded more than 1 or 2 strange line-ups.

BUT, in the last year, he has won 2 international trophies, won 3 and drawn 1 against our biggest rival, and is poised to get us back to the World Cup. He may not deserve to have his name uttered in the same breath as Pep Guardiola or Alex Ferguson. But, the results indicate that he's not a disaster, either.

  11. Also agree wholeheartedly with your Zimmerman comment. Along the back line, we are clearly a better team with him in there than any of the other players in the pool now, including Brooks.

  12. I had the same assessment. I can't recall a coach who is so inconsistent and this game is a microcosm of that. Can we please get anybody, I mean anybody, to actually put the ball into the net from inside the 6. The number of high xG chances we have missed and not just missed but widely missed is incredible. Sometimes I can't believe they are "professional" players; I can't imagine how good this team would be with A a more consistent coach and B a goal scorer. In that case I truly think we would be gunning for a quarterfinal slot in the WC. Absent that we are going to scrape into qualifying as the third place team and if we get out of our group that will be something. What on earth do John Brooks and Joe Scally have to do to get on this roster? I'm beginning to think it's something personal. Keep up the great work. And I appreciate a more balanced review of the US coach and team as opposed to the mainstream media.

  13. I think there are a lot of fans that agree that a point in this game is good and are not unhappy about it. However most of those fans realize that Berhalter let a golden opportunity go. I feel Mexico was vulnerable to our attack and really only needed to make one change in the midfield to make the difference. Acosta had a pretty good game but he along with Adams just can't create and move the ball. Berhalter tried it in a previous game and it really didn't work offensively tho defensively it did. Was the plan be defensive and let the front 3 figure it out? I honestly think DLT could have done what Acosta did but with a little more offense and ball movement. One sub. Would have made the difference and possibly created more than 3 good chances. Overall good game and agree about Berhalters "plan b".

  14. Very good result to get a point in Mexico City. Yes, a win was well within our grasp – Pulisic, Pefok – but we had some close shaves defensively as well. I think we get a win vs Panama.

  15. I told you to not be afraid and play your best against Mexico. Had he not played the best 11 available, we wouldn't have come up with a huge point. Now there are two games to get our tickets to the WC. About the game I thought we, for the first time we were not afraid to play Mexico. We didn't lose our heads by not being to aggressive, arguing getting yellow cards and loosing a man. I am happy for the result. We have good players to always play aggressive, offensively and defensively. Now with Panama, we need to try to score early, keep up the good attitudes, let's use our offense as our best weapon to defend. Get 3 points and stay healthy.

  16. We had two opportunities Poicic and pefo folk but a appoints a point we played good let’s go USA Panama win then we’re in the qualifying Qatar World Cup let’s go and get it

  17. I have no friends to chop this stuff up in real life so I apologize for being a keyboard warrior all the time…
Gregg's line-up was ballsy… I appreciate it. The game looked relatively even despite our lack of possession ability in the midfield. His mid-game tactics and subs blew my mind… it was like he wasn't watching the game unfold.
Yedlin, on a yellow and competing a bit too physically was a 2nd half red card waiting to happen.. Acosta JUST finished a game at right back for club.. We needed better possession in midfield with Acosta hanging in there but out of position as an 8. Isn't that a 1 + 1 = 2 scenario? Gio in for Yedlin and shift Acosta to right back starting the second half. Maybe Gio could even help unlock the Pulisic we've been waiting to see all WCQ? Let's be honest, it just ain't happening along side Robinson an Acosta on the left.

He didn't do that… fine… but then the reality of removing Adams and Yedlin for two CBs to finish the game in what looked a Lot more like a 5-2-3 than it did a 3-5-2. In a game we actually had a real chance of stealing we wind up with 3CBs playing next to a LB; 2men alone in the midfield; and 3 forwards having nobody to feed them the ball.. It was odd. My guess is Gregg wrote down his subs for 0-0 before kick-off and blindly stuck to it.

But hey… we got a point in Azteca so.. (with all the tentative upward inflection I can muster) we're haaaaappy? And now with known injuries and known yellow card issues we're short handed in key areas going into our most important match… Gregg has shown an ability to learn his best players… albeit incredibly slowly. But his in game tactics are a huge question mark… and his stubbornness with call-ups and players he seems to beef with continue to knee cap this team. A point in Azteca is Historically great. It's great considering our past as a soccer nation AND it's great considering this may be the last WCQ game between these two rivals, in this legendary place, that means THIS much. It's the end of an era, and they (MX) didn't win. That's awesome.

We'll qualify..(*knocks on wood*).. we will. But the concerns I have with Gregg and US Soccer are World Cup Level concerns and, once again, they didn't go away.

  18. Second half we were definitely gassing out but 7200 ft is no joke. I think Musah started making fatigue mistakes between the 50th and 60th minute. I can see the defensive subbing but I wouldn't have been sad to see LdlT as fresh legs to run with Gio.

  19. I really appreciate you giving Gregg credit for last night. Anyone who doesn't has to be questioned as biased. He had key injuries and tough decisions and despite individual performances being not great we were strong collectively. Pretty darn comfortable 90 minutes. He brought on Gio at the perfect time and I also liked the timing of going to 5 backs. Good night for the manager.
