Will Chelsea Sign Anyone in the Transfer Window?

With the January transfer window now open, the big question on everyone’s lips remains the same. Will Chelsea FC sign any players during the window? Their team is nowhere near full strength at the moment, and with an aging squad the problem may only get worse. In my opinion, they need to sign a couple of players at least. Due to their transfer embargo they won’t be able to sign any players until 2011 otherwise.

Their best players are out of action right now. Drogba (their best striker), Kalou, Mikel John Obi and Essien (their best defensive midfielder) are all at the African Cup of Nations for the entire month of January, and Nicholas Anelka (their second best striker) is out with an injury he recently picked up whilst training. Many fans have been left bewildered by Chelsea Manager Carlo Ancelotti’s comments that he would ‘streak on the pitch’ if he signed any players during this transfer window.

That being said, they are top of the English Premier League, so maybe Carlo Ancelotti (who is, lest we forget a proven winner wherever he’s been) knows exactly what he’s doing. In the F.A. Cup against Watford FC he played the young striker Daniel Sturridge up front and he repaid the manager’s faith in him by scoring two goals in a 5-0 win.

News has leaked out recently that Chelsea are looking to buy Italian striker Giampaolo Pazzini from surprise Italian package Sampdoria. The deal would reportedly be for around £22 million pounds, although a potential stumbling block could be that Sampdoria would want Pazzini loaned back to them for the rest of the season.

Precious Dede – The Best Female Goalkeeper in Africa

This beautiful 30 years old Delta queen of Nigeria and captain of Nigeria senior female National team is perhaps the best female goalkeeper in Africa as evident in the just concluded African Women Championship held in South Africa held from on the 31 October to 14 November 2010.

What are the distinctive qualities that sets are apart from her fellow goalkeepers?
There is much, but I will be focusing on five of these qualities which have made her to not just the best, but the only female goalkeeper in Africa to concede the least number of goals in a major tournament.

calmness
Watching the captain and goalkeeper of the Super Falcons of Nigeria throughout the just concluded African Women Championship held in South Africa. She never exhibited any stage fright but remained calm and composed with perfect composure. Her calmness eventually aided her team mates as they grew in confidence as the tournament progressed into the knock out stage.

experience
Precious Dede has the distinct honour of being one of the most experienced players in the present Super Falcons squad. She has played in the 2003 and 2007 World Cup as well as the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic female soccer events. She has had a distinguish career playing for top female clubs in Nigeria and also with Arna-Bjørnar football club in Norway in the 2009 season.

aerial abilities
One of the major features that distinguish a good goalkeeper from are fellow colleagues, is the ability to deal with aerial balls coming from corner kicks, free-kicks and other dead ball situations. This amazing lady also has unique aerial ability that made her stand above her contemporaries.

humility
Some footballers never get to achieve the highest level of their career due to one problem or the other. Top among such problems, is the issue of discipline on or off the field of play. It is a serious issue that has seen talented and budding stars getting axed from the national team. Precious Dede is a shining example of humility and simplicity. Her humble disposition makes her a favourite among friends and colleagues.

the ability to inspire her colleagues
As captain of the senior national female team of Nigeria, Precious Dede has been an inspiration and leader extraordinary. A good goalkeeper radiates confidence and not fear on her team mates, and that is what Precious does with ease. Standing between the post and propelling her defence line with inspiring saves at point-blank range gave her the award of the best goalkeeper at the 2010 African Women Championship.

English Premier Football League Game Week 22 Match Preview – Part 1

Blackburn v Newcastle

Blackburn rooted second from bottom entertain Newcastle at Ewood Park. This see’s Sam Allaydace former team come to Blackburn. Newcastle are in poor form this season. A number of players are rumoured to be leaving St James Park. Shay Given has been the one exception, his saves alone managed to keep Liverpool at bay, and for that Arsenal have been altered to his goal keeping prowess.

Blackburn have picked up a few points since Ince was sacked earlier on. With Santa Cruz rumoured as wanting to join Hughes at City, his goals will be needed this weekend if Blackburn are to get anything from the game.

Game Prediction: Draw 1:1

Bolton v Manchester United

Bolton Wanderers lost their previous league game away against Arsenal and only won once in their last six games. They have lost five games in the last six. They have only managed to score 4 times in this period.

Bolton have been linked to Jamie Bullard from Fulham but as yet have not been able to meet the asking price.

Manchester United won their last game 1-0 at home against Wigan, and are the leagues in form team. With Rooney out for a few weeks after scoring the winning goal against Wigan, Tevez should start the match.

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Bolton at the Reebok last season, but the champions are in top form and will be looking to take first place from Liverpool by 5pm. And with Bolton having been on a dreadful run, there can only be one team in this match.

Game Prediction: Man Win 1:0.

English Premier League’s Most Shocking Moments

With the announcement on Friday that Alex McLeish was set to take up the vacant managerial role at arch rivals Aston Villa, we take a look at some of the other controversial moments within the history of the English Premier League.

McLeish to Aston Villa from Birmingham City

Following victory over overwhelming favourites Arsenal in the League Cup, McLeish subsequently suffered a terrible run of form in the Premier League resulting in his Birmingham team getting relegated on the last day of the season. Although the board confirmed that he would keep his job, McLeish sent his resignation by email on June 12th amid rumours that he was set to join Aston Villa a role which he accepted 5 days later even though there were huge protests from Villa fans.

DiCanio pushes referee

During a game between Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal in 1998, Di Canio saw red in both senses of the word. An altercation between Di Canio and Arsenal’s Martin Keown led to referee Paul Durkin showing the former the red card. Di Canio, in a fit of rage pushed referee Durkin, who fell to the ground in an almost comical fashion. Di Canio was subsequently fined £10,000 and received an 11 match ban.

David Busst injury

Arguably the most horrific injury the English Premier League has seen, Busst was playing for Coventry City against Manchester United in 1996 when he collided with United players Denis Irwin and Brian McClair, resulting in extensive compound fractures to both the tibia and fibula of his right leg. The horrific image led to Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel vomitting on the pitch. Busst’s career was over but he has stayed in the game with Coventry City as Director of Football in the Community.

Kieron Dyer & Lee Bowyer fight on the pitch

A true «handbags» fight kicked off during Newcastle’s 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa in 2005. Both players appeared in a press conference after the game with then Newcastle manager Graeme Souness to apologise for their behaviour but they pointedly did not apologise to each other

Robbie Fowler white line celebration

After scoring for Liverpool in the Merseyside derby against Everton, Fowler used the white line of the penalty area to simulate snorting cocaine as his goal celebration. This was in reference to the accusations of drug abuse from a faction of Everton fans. Fowler ended up with a £60,000 club fine and a 4 match ban for his antics.

Gallas protest

After Arsenal threw away a 2 goal lead against Birmingham in 2008 after Gael Clichy conceded a stoppage time penalty Gallas promptly sat in the centre circle and didn’t move. It was only when Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger consoled him did he leave the field of play. Some people say that he was acting like a spoilt child but the general consensus is that his actions showed how much he cared about the club. 18 months later he moved to North London rivals Tottenham.

Adebayor goal celebration

After a summer move from Arsenal to Manchester City, Adebayor played for the first time against his former club at The City of Manchester Stadium at the start of the 2009-2010 season. The 4-2 victory for Man City was marred by Adebayor who, after scoring his goal ran the length of the pitch to the away end full of Arsenal fans and proceeded to goad them with his celebrations nearly inciting a riot.

Cantona kung-fu kick

Probably the most controversial moment in English Premier League history was when Eric Cantona leapt into the crowd at Crystal Palace and performed a kung fu kick on one of their fans who had been goading him as he walked to the tunnel after being shown the red card. For his actions he was fined £20,000, issued with 120 hours of community service and was banned from playing for the remainder of the season.

Campbell going to Arsenal

Sol Campbell was for many «Mr Tottenham» during the 1990’s, a tremendous defender and club captain. In 2001 after being awarded a contract which would have made him the highest paid player in the club’s history, Campbell switched allegiances and moved to arch rivals Arsenal on a free transfer. This of course caused uproar as he had stated in the Spurs magazine weeks earlier that he would never play for Arsenal. 10 years on and Spurs fans still regard him as «Judas» and he is still regarded as one of the biggest traitors in Premier League football.

One of the Best Goal Keepers in World Cup 2010 – Vincent Enyeama

Nicknamed «The Cat», Vincent Enyeama is one of the most favorite players in the Nigerian National Squad by both fans in his country and coaches. For several years he had been the undisputed first choice by Nigeria’s coaches in goal for the squad. Born on August 29, 1982, he had been the top goalkeeper for the Super Eagles since he took over from Ike Shorunmu in his country’s final match at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Beginning his soccer career at an early age of 16 with the semi-professional club Ibom Stars, he continued to improve his skills until he was signed by the major club Enyimba Aba where he played for three seasons from 2001-2004. During his stint at that club, he won the CAF Champions League twice. However, he was always substituted before penalty shootouts by his coach. Not knowing the real reason behind this, but accepting the fact that he probably was not good enough for penalty kick stoppages, he work doubly hard and mentally trained himself to prepare for such events and not falter. He moved to FC Heartland for the 2005 season before transferring to Israel.

In Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv, a minor league club in Israel, he had a very productive first season showing his feline-like physical abilities and athletic skills. In his first season there, his contributions on the pitch helped his team qualify for the Israel State Cup and achieve fourth place in the Israeli Premier League which, in turn, qualified the team to the 2006 UEFA Cup. He stayed with the club for two seasons and in 2007 moved to Hapoel Tel Aviv where he is currently connected.

Although his team did not have a good 2007-08 season, Vincent Enyeama continued to grow and improve not only his goalkeeping skills but also his leadership skills as well. At one time when his club wasn’t performing well, he wrote his team a letter asking them to work together and fight for each other and the club. He had not only continued to improve as a player but also a leader which helped his team not only avoid relegation and but also contend for the state cup final. His consistent improvements are results of a superb training system that include not only physical conditioning but mental training as well to keep his focus intact every second of a match.

His consistent performance for his commercial clubs earned him a substitute spot for the 2002 World Cup where he played for only one match which was against England. During that last group game, he steadied is nerves and kept his composure to keep a clean sheet and salvage a draw against the powerhouse English squad. Since then he became his coaches’ top choice for goalkeeper when Ike Shorunmu retired from international soccer.

He had consistently contained his country’s goal during the 2004 and 2006 African Cup of Nations. He had a very memorable 2010 sequel of the tournament when he stopped three penalties in the quarterfinals against Tunisia but unfortunately lost to Cote d’Ivore in the semi-final.

The goalkeeper who had been substituted before penalty shootouts early in his career became the hero for many of Nigeria’s international games.

In the first group stage match against Argentina in the 2010 World Cup, had a superb performance by stopping and saving a variety of shots from some the top goal-scorers in the world such as Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain but could not save the game-winning header from Gabriel Heinze. Still, with that loss, he was named Man of the Match for his spectacular performance.

Even in the face of defeat, an athlete who had shown great resilience and desire against a mightier opponent is always given due recognition. Enyeama, who chose to be better than who he was before by consistently learning, is one goalkeeper who has etched his name as one of the best in the world of soccer.

The History of the FIFA World Cup Football Trophy

There are many trophies presented for various sporting endeavours today, however one of the most famous of these is the FIFA World Cup. Yet what many people do not realize is that the FIFA World Cup Trophy awarded today has only been in existence since 1974. Prior to this date those nations that were winners of this particular sporting event were presented with the Jules Rimet Trophy instead.

The main reason why a new FIFA trophy was introduced was in 1970 Brazil were awarded the Jules Rimet Trophy outright as they had won this competition three times. As they were presented with this trophy so the FIFA had to arrange for a new trophy to be made to replace it.

The new FIFA World Cup trophy was then presented to the winning Nation in 1974 and this was West Germany who at the time were captained by Franz Beckenbauer. The trophy that they were presented with was designed by Silvio Gazzaniga and produced by Bertoni Milano.

This trophy just like the Jules Rimet one before is very elaborate in design. On the body there are two figures shown holding up the Earth and on its based are engraved «FIFA World Cup» in out pouring letters. The actual trophy is made from 18 carat solid gold and weighs a total of 11lb and measures to a height of 14.4 inches. To ensure that the cup stands correctly the base which measures a width of 5.1 inches has been made from a strong carbonate mineral known as Malachite.

To be able to view the names of the winning nations on this particular trophy it needs to be turned upside down. This is because the names and dates when the trophy was won are engraved on plaques in English on the bottom of the base.

Today there are still enough plaques available to allow a further 9 nations to have their winning details placed on this trophy. It is only after the FIFA World Cup Competition in 2038 will a decision need to be made as to whether this particular trophy should be retired and replaced with a new one.

The biggest difference with this particular FIFA World Cup Trophy is that it is not one that can be won outright as Brazil did with the Jules Rimet Trophy. Today although the winning team are presented with this trophy on the day of their victory they don’t actually get to keep it and instead of provided with a replica.

The main reason for this is that following Italy winning the competition in 2006 after the FIFA World Cup Trophy had been restored it was damaged. A number of days after the trophy had been presented to Italy pictures appeared in newspapers showing a small piece of the Malachite base had broken off. The damage to the trophy was repaired but in order to prevent such a situation in the future the FIFA decided no longer to allow the winning nation to retain the trophy until the next tournament.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy replica that the winning nation now receive is the same size as the original. However, unlike the original these are not made from solid gold but rather they use gold plating instead.

English League Is the Best Among Football Leagues

In every football-playing country, there is a league system. The most competent clubs play in the top division league. The sport being the most popular one in the world, top-tier football leagues are watched by the crazy fans from all over the globe. In fact, the most exciting league matches find the highest number of viewers. These five leagues are as follows:

· Barclays Premier League

· Spanish League or La Liga

· Italian League or Serie A

· German League or Bundesliga

· French League or Ligue 1

Among these five leagues, Barclays Premier League is considered the most exciting one. A decade ago or so, Serie A was widely considered the most competitive league in the world. However, things have changed over the last few years since Manchester United lost their monopoly. The Red Devils – Man U are often referred to as their famous nickname – were simply unstoppable under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson. Once their golden era is over, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal are some of the big names dominating the English Premier League landscape.

This 2015-16 season, Leicester City have emerged as the Premier League champions. Premier League is no longer predictable like what we have been watching in Serie A or Bundesliga where Juventus and Bayern Munich have been champions for several years in a row. In addition to the above-specified names, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Southampton are other big names in the first-division English League. Tottenham have finished their campaign second on the league table. Chelsea have suffered a lot and failed to make a great start to the last campaign. It led to sacking of their manager Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea or the Blues managed to drive themselves back from their woeful run under manager Guus Hiddink but due to their earlier drop, they failed to break into the top four. According to reports, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are among the 20 wealthiest clubs in the world. These leagues are most televised in a number of countries. The TV rights earn the clubs millions of pound. The prize money earned by the league winner is the best in any country. The players earn the most attractive wages that can be offered in any league.

History of English League

English League has become the giant one after starting as a small one in the 19th century. They have also earned success in the European competition. Years ago, the star players from Brazil and Argentina used to prefer playing in the Serie A or La Liga. They did not think twice to snub offers from Premier League in order to show their skill in other countries. The story is completely different now. Both the Brazilian and Argentinean players now love to ply their trade in the Premier League. In fact, the star players from several football-playing countries are now eager to prove themselves in England.

English football league is marked by both pace and skill. Every year, a new club wins the Premier League title and that makes the charm of watching the league alive.

Why Indigenous Nigerian Coaches Cannot Handle The Super Eagles

The clamor for indigenous coaches to handle most especially the senior national team of Nigeria, known as the Super Eagles has been on for as long as I can remember. The issue of national pride is always cited as one of the major reasons why the exponents of this school of thought kept on with their agitation.

At a time, I was almost wooed into this school of thought, maybe in sympathy with the local coaches that have paid their dues as far as football achievement is concerned.

I was almost carried away by our major achievements in the cadet categories of the world cup most especially the under 17 category. Nigeria has won that trophy 3 times since the inaugural edition was held in China as far back as 1985, when an indigenous coach by the name of Christian Chukwu, himself a former captain of the national senior team, led a group of young unexposed boys to the Asian nation of China to put their names in the Guinness book of world record as the first country in the world to win this championship then being sponsored by Kodak.

Before they left the shores of Nigerian, no one gave them the slightest chance for success. When they finally returned home with the trophy, a lot of euphoria greeted their achievement. And just as stated earlier, this feat has been repeated two more times after the maiden edition, ironically in the same continent of Asia. First, it was China in 1985, then Japan in 1993 and the most recent one in Korea in 2007.

At these three occasions, our indigenous coaches were at the helm of affairs, first it was Chairman Christian Chukwu, then Fanny Ammun and recently the late Yomi Tella who died a few weeks after returning from a glorious outing in Korea.

In 1996, another exploit was achieved in the field of soccer by Nigeria in far away Atlanta, Georgia in the United States of America. There, an underestimated Nigerian side led by the Dutch man Bonfrere-Jo took the world by storm by winning an Olympic gold medal that has eluded the almighty Brazil since they registered their name as the greatest soccer playing nation in the world, having won all that there is to win in soccer at every level of the game expect at the Olympics (I am beginning to think that they are jinxed). Ironically, they were eliminated in the semi-final by Nigeria in an epic game which the bookmakers had already given to the Brazilians. The event that led to the elimination of Brazil in the soccer event of Atlanta Olympic game is a topic for another day.

The issue here however is that Nigeria won that soccer gold under the tutelage of a foreign coach, and it is on record that the two time Nigeria has won the African Cup of nations, first in 1980 was under a Brazilian known as Otto Gloria, the second time was in 1994 in Tunisia under the flamboyant and vocal Dutchman known as Clement Westerhof, it was this same man that qualified Nigeria to her first ever senior soccer world cup popularly referred to as USA 94. It was a double feat for the Dutchman who had earlier in the year won the African cup of nations in grand style, thereby sending a signal to the world about Nigeria’s preparedness to take her rightful place in the field of world soccer.

Why have the foreigners succeeded more than the indigenous coaches when it comes to the senior level?

I would want to proffer the reasons in two ways, first the administrative lapses in the Nigerian Football Association. Most people involved in the day to day running of the game of soccer in Nigeria, knows close to nothing about the game and its challenges. The Nigerian Football Association is thus politicized and is mainly used as an instrument of political gratification for electoral supports. The foreign coaches succeed because they are hired under a well signed and sealed contract, they are offered mouth watering contracts that help to motivate them into putting in their best.

When it comes to the local coaches, it is a different ball game. They are hardly given a concrete contract and when that even happens, a lot of interference from the powers that be in the sports ministry and the soccer ruling house makes decisions making by the indigenous coaches difficult. The issue of job security is another determining factor. Coaches are hired and fired at will, most of them being owed salaries for couple of months, and they are never to talk about such issues otherwise it would be seen as sabotage and an act of insubordination since these coaches are treated like ministry workers.

The issue of respect from the players is another kettle of fish when it comes to coaching the senior national team. Come to think of it, some of these professional players earn as much as Eighty Thousand British Pounds a week in their various European clubs, that translated to our local currency, runs into millions of Naira which could pay the indigenous coaches’ two years salary. Now, psychologically, the student here is living more comfortably than the teacher, has achieved more than the so-called teacher and therefore finds it difficult to subject himself under the authority of a man who has never played professional soccer all his life.

The foreign coaches are more respected by players and administrators alike and that tends to give them the upper hand ahead of their local colleagues.

Until the time that the local coaches are treated with much more respect like the foreign coaches in term of remunerations and free-hands to be able to operate without undue interference, the possibility of an indigenous coach succeeding with the senior national soccer team looks like a mirage for now and the near future.

Football is one of the most popular sports in Nigeria with an estimated following of over 50 millions fans scattered over the 36 states of the country. The game has gained so much significance with the subsequent emergence of the Super Eagles as one of the biggest brand in Africa.

The game has always enjoyed the patronage of certain technocrats who are commonly referred to football coaches. These are the arrow-head of every successful team, as they ensure that players are well-groomed and conditioned. In Nigeria, football coaches have been given their fair share of prominence with the insistence of the Nigeria Football federation to recruit Local coaches to manage the national teams. One the most popular tactician in the country is none other than Samson Siasia.

Brief Biography

Coach Samson Siasia remains the most popular football technocrat in Nigeria till date, with his antecedent in the age-grade teams. In December 2010, he was formally appointed as the Chief Coach of the Super Eagles after months of media speculations. He remains a firm believer in grass root football with the strong emphasis on home based players who have been deployed into the main stream of the Super Eagles.

He is also the founder of Siaone soccer academy which is presently based in Yenegoa Bayelsa State. The academy was borne out of a passion to groom future talent and potential players for the U-17 National Football team.
