Berhalter On USMNT: We Made Mistakes During World Cup Qualifying

Would Gregg Berhalter make any changes in his approach in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying if he had to do it again? Obviously we qualified so the direct answer would be «no need» and everyone should be happy our boys are going back to the big stage. That’s not to say every decision and performance were ideal.

Derek and Brett are joined by Meg Swanick to go over the recent interview by Bobby Warshaw had with Gregg Berhalter and break it down. Will he address any concerns or poor performances?

  1. I actually truly feel bad for. Meg. Watching her trying to be middle of the road with this audience is quite hilarious.

Also Tac is an utter imbicile and i have never read his twitter

  2. Honest answer? … Hilarious!!! The most honest answer ggg could have given is… F U…. I dont have to answer your b.s. And make you feel better. Ifyou need that then you need to re-evaluate your life. That is the most honest answer and the most correct answer.

  3. Derek – tiny nitpick – re ~ 44-45 min mark and stating, "It would have made us feel a lot better..", had he shared that sentiment you played, the night of the match. He's got ZERO responsibility to make us / fans / media "feel better"… Beth was close in her reflection about his focus being the players – even post match conversations / responses to media.
A first time listener – appreciate your content, focus & openness considering perspectives!

  4. Brooks attitude to me is that he has no input into how the defensive line is set up to play. His experience means nothing to GGG and his ego. I do not buy into any of the Brooks negative narratives. Counting on 3 MLS CB's (w/Long) going into WC is a huge mistake, especially playing in front of average-to-best Steffon or Turner

  5. Here contributing to the "algorithm." Enjoyed the show. I bet Mr. Derek Richey was most likely very happy in having Meg Swanick on the show. Btw, the "g" is pronounced as an "h" in my name "Rogelio" please Mr. Derek Richey and Brett Corbit.

  6. Brett,
Gregg meant we need to find our identity under my stewardship. He’s the new coach with new system and it is a new identity. Players need to find it.

    Derek,
Gregg does have to say I don’t throw players under the bus. It explains his post game conference of Panama game and Brooks. It is his style and I like it. Better than Klinsmann who never took accountability.

    Great Show. Meg is awesome!

  7. I a novice on US roster choices but any reason why Duane Holmes gets no love? Star on Huddersfield, which will be very close on promotion to EPL. I just don’t understand how this guy isn’t on any radar, is he dead? I hope not…

  8. Frustrating. Brooks is our best passing CB, our most experienced (at club and international level), and he plays in the best league… yet in order to get into camp we have to "build around him"? Zimmerman is JUST as slow as Brooks, and it turns out that we don't have to build around HIM. It's unreal that Brooks can't even get time in camp while we have another CB with similar tactical deficiencies starting every game.

And don't get me wrong, Zimmerman has been really fantastic and consistent, but he's slow and he has a fast partner to make up for his slowness. I think Brooks and Zimmerman are actually quite similar, but while neither Zimm nor MRob can pass very well, Brooks is fantastic at it. It's a crying shame if Brooks is not given a chance to be part of this team. He certainly deserves it, and I think he'd clearly make the squad better.

  9. I think our identity as a culture is to play to our strength of athleticism. As Americans we love sports with high tempo and lots of action. So the German gengenpress style would fit us as a culture. Don’t know about these players specifically.

  10. Maybe I listened to the wrong more than a decade old clip of a dog interviewing Steve Sampson, but it doesn't sound so bad. I thought I was about to be ear assaulted, but no.

  11. Maybe it’s just a technical thing but maybe he meant something else. But scally didn’t say he didn’t have any contact with ggg. He said not much. Again maybe intent.

  12. I just don't see the argument against Brooks being in the lineup. Yeah he's slow but you have A. Robinson and Richards on either side of him who are quick enough.
I remember an interview with Pep Guardiola where he explained his center back philosophy. He prefers his LCB to be left footed for quick transitions into counter attacks down that left flank.
Brooks can also be the aggressor in an aggressor-sweeper partnership. That is, have Brooks (who happens to be taller that Richards) be the guy to challenge balls over the top, be the first to pressure when the opposition attackers receive the ball at their feet and are facing away from goal, and be adventurous by dribbling into the midfield or spraying passes. While Richards can be the one cleaning up for his mistakes, while still having enough on the ball quality to make a line-breaking pass if the opportunity for one arises. At Barca he had this philosophy with Puyol and Marquez, later Puyol and Pique, at Bayern with Boateng and Dante and even now at City with Laporte and Dias.

  13. GGG is saying he doesn't know what position Sargent is now, a winger or a 9. But GGG has played players out of position. For example playing Hoppe as a winger when he is actually a 9.

  14. Meg's pure intelligence is just above and beyond anything we have on youtube. It is almost tangible what makes her a great journalist. Loved the whole vid! ❤️

  15. GGG likes to be in extra control. After the games he doesn't want to say anything "incorrectly". With Bobby Warsaw I'm sure he has prescreened the questions.

  16. Love the Baltimore love from Meg! We even had Sebastian salazar wearing a Baltimore blast ? shirt on Futbol Americas (the same episode herc wore the berhalter ball shirt). Great video guys. I hope brooks gets another chance because we need someone who has played in a World Cup on this team (I think yedlin is the only other player on the roster who has?)
