Why Are Football Logos Becoming So Boring?

A lot of football clubs, from Manchester City to Inter Milan, and a lot of national teams and competitions, from Spain to the Premier League and the World Cup, have undergone major rebrands in recent years.

A lot of these rebranded logos look very similar; they’re minimalist, corporate, feature fewer colours, round crests, and typically less text.

So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at why so many football clubs are rebranding, why those rebrands all look the same, and why football badges are becoming so soulless and boring.

  1. Great video as always. One point, my club Aston Villa created 2 new badges, there were meetings with fans on the issue and in the end it was put to a fan vote, I don't really understand how that is controversial.

  2. Liverpool has a have-your-cake-and-eat-it type situation with the full 1990s crest still the official badge but just the liverbird and LFC on the shirt, and both appearing on merch and marketing. I don't know why all clubs don't do something similar.

  3. This youtuber just hates City. Their new design (not new) is aesthetically very pleasing and could hardly be described as boring. It recalls history and tradition. Stop letting your prejudice betray you, Sevens. It's undignified.

  4. Maybe my American side is kicking in, but I’m not sure why a club can’t have two different symbols-one badge, one logo. Just about every American team has multiple logos. It seems like a very logical happy medium. Use the badge on some kits and shirts for the fans and use the logo on international marketing. If Juve put the old badge on one of their kits next season, I guarantee you it’ll be a top seller.

  5. But the main reason the baseball logos (Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants) are so recognizable is because they have not changed in over a century. The insignia you get on that cap is almost identical to the one Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter both wore.

  6. I'm a City fan. Our new badge a renewal of our old badge and everything in it is symbolic and connects us with our roots as a Mancunian and Lancastrian club. It was the eagle badge that was meaningless nonsense that only came about because of intellectual property issues. I like our new badge. Much prefer it to the eagle.

  7. The new logos are looking awesome, all of them. Minimalism is the way. It's not meant to be a coat of Arms of the city or the county, but the sports club, therefore the logo needs to be more simple and more modern. Coat of arms can carry all the historic meanings. Sports team logo doesn't have to.

  8. ngl i love most of them. ofc some are poorly executed, but others really needed some update and simplification (like some of the crests, which don't serve as good logos since their level of detail is so high)

  9. I mean the bro literally was obsessed with city in this video (spitting poison) despite us being the only team who actually didn't follow a new trend and reverted back to a more traditional badge, current one literally being a compilation of all the previous round ones all together. Sure the eagle one was the one that made me fall in love with the team, but i can understand the oldwr fans who wanted a return of the older style

  10. when you showed the Boca Jrs cookies, in the top corner you can see a fraction of my club's badge, San Lorenzo. That one is composed by a pointy shield with red and blue bars, and a white circle in the middle with the letters CASLA (Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro) on it. Inspired by the style of the badge used in the past century, in recent years we are using only the circle with the letters as our badge in shirts and clothes and the other one is still used by the club in others aspects, kinda like what liverpool are doing. I really like it honestly, it's a breath of fresh air in a league where almost every club has never changed their badge since their inception.

  11. A logo is the most important part of brand image, that's why clubs are trying to get their badge as simplistic and memorable as possible. Not a football example, but look at Tesla and Apple. Two very successful companies with minimalistic logos which pretty much everyone knows.

  12. Actually, the logo that was adopted by Man City is very similar with the logos they've been using back in the 70's, 80's and most of the 90's. The difference is that they removed the FC achronym and added the year when the club was founded, but the design is the same. I think they also swapped blue for white and vice-versa in some elements. But virtually is the same logo from 30-40 years ago.
