Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami , known as Inter Miami CF or Inter Miami, is an American professional soccer club based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a suburb of Miami. Established in 2018, the club began playing in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer during the 2020 season. The club garnered international attention prior to its founding because of club president and co-owner David Beckham and again in 2023 when it signed Lionel Messi. Following the signing, the club won its first major trophy, the expanded 2023 Leagues Cup, the North American zonal competition for the CONCACAF region.
JANUARY 29, 2018, Officially launched as Major League Soccer’s 25th Club set to begin play in March 2020.
SEPTEMBER 5, 2018, Inter Miami CF officially announced the name, crest, and colors of the club.
MAY 8, 2019, The former Lockhart Stadium structure was demolished in a ceremony hosted by club representatives. The site would go on to house Inter Miami CF’s new stadium – now DRV PNK Stadium – as well as the permanent training center – now the Florida Blue Training Center – and Inter Miami CF II.
FEBRUARY 24, 2020, Inter Miami CF unveiled its first-ever home Major League Soccer (MLS) jersey. Inspired by the wings of the great white heron and accented by pink to reflect the vibrant soul of South Florida, the Inter Miami Home Jersey proudly represents the Club and its fans in the franchise’s historic 2020 inaugural MLS season.
MARCH 1, 2020, Inter Miami CF kicked off its inaugural season in Major League Soccer (MLS) with a 5:30 p.m. ET match at Banc of California Stadium against reigning Supporters’ Shield champions Los Angeles FC. The hosts left with a narrow 1-0 victory despite a valiant effort from debutants Inter Miami.
AUGUST 22, 2020, Inter Miami CF earned the first victory in Club history with a 3-2 win over Orlando City SC in its first match at Inter Miami CF Stadium – now DRV PNK Stadium.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2020, Inter Miami CF signed record-breaking goal scorer and three-time LaLiga and Serie A winner Gonzalo Higuaín as a Designated Player. The Argentine forward joined Inter Miami after leading Juventus FC to the 2019-20 Serie A.
On June 1, 2023, Inter Miami announced that the club had parted ways with Neville. At the time, the club was placed last in the Eastern Conference. Four days later, seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi announced his intention to join the club as a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, turning down an offer to play for Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal and ruling out a return to FC Barcelona. Messi signed his Designated Player contract on July 15, 2023, joining the team through the 2025 MLS season. Argentine and former Barça manager Tata Martino was appointed as the head coach of the club on June 28 and joined Miami the following month.
Messi formally joined the team, alongside former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets, at an unveiling ceremony on July 16. Five days later, another of his former Barcelona teammates, Jordi Alba, also signed for Inter Miami. Following Messi’s arrival, resale ticket prices for his first games with the club increased by over 1,000%. Inter Miami became the top selling team across all sports on e-commerce retailer Fanatics, while Messi broke the record for most shirt sales in 24 hours. The average price for tickets to Miami matches on reseller StubHub increased five-fold to $161 on average.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is a men’s professional soccer league sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation, which represents the sport’s highest level in the United States. The league comprises 29 teams—26 in the U.S. and 3 in Canada—since the 2023 season. The league is headquartered in Midtown Manhattan.
Major League Soccer is the most recent in a series of men’s premier professional national soccer leagues established in the United States and Canada. The predecessor of MLS was the North American Soccer League (NASL), which existed from 1968 until 1984. MLS was founded in 1993 as part of the United States’ successful bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The inaugural season took place in 1996 with ten teams. MLS experienced financial and operational struggles in its first few years, losing millions of dollars and folding two teams in 2002. Since then, developments such as the proliferation of soccer-specific stadiums around the league, implementation of the Designated Player Rule allowing teams to sign star players such as David Beckham, and national TV contracts have made MLS profitable. With an average attendance of over 20,000 per game, MLS has the fourth-highest average attendance of any major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada after the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and Canadian Football League (CFL),[citation needed] and was the seventh-highest attended professional soccer league worldwide by 2013.
The MLS regular season typically starts in late February or early March and runs through mid-October, with each team playing 34 games; the team with the best record is awarded the Supporters’ Shield. Eighteen teams compete in the postseason MLS Cup Playoffs in late October and November, culminating in the league’s championship game, the MLS Cup.
Instead of operating as an association of independently owned clubs, MLS is a single entity in which each team is owned by the league and individually operated by the league’s investors. The league has a fixed membership like most sports leagues in the United States and Canada, which makes it one of the few soccer leagues that does not use a promotion and relegation process.
LA Galaxy have the most MLS Cups, with five. They are also tied with D.C. United for most Supporters’ Shields, with four each. Los Angeles FC are the defending champions, as they defeated Philadelphia Union 3–0 on penalties in MLS Cup 2022 on November 5, 2022, to mark the end of the 2022 season.
MLS has 29 clubs that will compete during the league’s 28th season in 2023. Conference alignment is as follows:
Eastern Conference
Atlanta United
Charlotte FC
Chicago Fire FC
FC Cincinnati
Columbus Crew
D.C. United

CF Montréal
Nashville SC
New England Revolution
New York City FC
New York Red Bulls

MLS Regular Season
Each of the 29 MLS clubs will play 34 matches in the MLS Regular Season, 17 at home and 17 away.
All Clubs in the Eastern Conference will play all intra-conference opponents two (2) times and six (6) cross-conference opponents one (1) time. All Clubs in the Western Conference will play all intra-conference opponents two (2) times, one (1) to two (2) additional intra-conference opponents one (1) time, and six (6) to seven (7) different cross-conference opponents one (1) time.
At the end of the MLS Regular Season, the top seven teams from each conference will automatically qualify to the Round One Best-of-3 series while the next two teams in each conference standings will qualify for a single-elimination Audi MLS Cup Playoffs Wild Card match. The winners of each Wild Card game will earn a spot in the Round One Best-of-3 series.
POINT SYSTEM: Clubs will receive three points for a win, one point for a tie and zero points for a loss.
GAME DAY ROSTERS: Each team can select a maximum of 20 players (11 starters and nine substitutes) for its official match roster. Teams are allowed a maximum of five Normal Substitutions per game to be used over the course of three opportunities, excluding half-time and match delays, but including cooling and/or drink breaks.
Additionally, MLS will continue to implement the concussion substitutes initiative. This initiative allows teams to make up to two concussion substitutions during a match to replace players with concussions or suspected concussions, regardless of the number of normal substitutions already used. If a team elects to use a concussion substitution, its opponent will receive an additional substitution and opportunity.

Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or «skinnier» fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.
