Episode 83 USA Agegroup Triathlete Jeff Schreiber

Great to speak to Jeff and hear how things are done in the USA as well as his awesome story.

Jeff says:»My own background in sport goes back to early childhood.  My father and his brother were American football players of note, earning university scholarships and playing briefly professionally in the NFL.  I grew up playing many of the ball sports, like soccer (I know, ‘football’ to you) and baseball, and as I grew taller, basketball, and then as I filled out a bit more, American football.  I played as a quarterback through my college years in the mid-80s and then had a short stint playing American football as a professional player-coach in the U.K., in a semi-pro league that just preceded the old World Football League minor league system for the NFL, for a team in the Midlands called the West Bromwich Fireballs.

I returned to the U.S. and embarked on a 30-year career in financial services with General Electric and a family with my wife of 29 years (we have two grown children, ages 26 and 22) and stayed somewhat active during that time playing basketball, and had a brief dalliance on the practice squad of the U.S. Olympic team handball team while living in Atlanta around the time of the ’96 Summer Olympics there.

It was not until I reached age 45 that I moved into endurance sports, after re-injuring a surgically reconstructed knee playing basketball, and slogged through my first sprint triathlon as a fundraiser for a chromosomal birth condition our daughter lives with.  Needless to say, I caught the multisport bug – it has moved from a weekend hobby to a lifestyle –  and I’ve progressed since then to do some 75+ endurance events, mainly short and middle distance triathlons, with Ironman 70.3 as my longest distance to date.  I first qualified to represent Team USA in age group world championships in Aquabike in 2018 and have now raced in World Triathlon multisport events across various disciplines in Spain, Slovakia, Germany and next year plan to race in Australia … though, as Dr. Jim noted in your podcast, “the elite podium-level racers are definitely not worried about me”.  I’m in it for the amazing experience of representing my country’s jersey at these events, being a good ambassador for the sport and the great camaraderie that happens with age-group cohorts from across the world.  I have enormous respect for Team GB and its members.

More recently, I’ve become more involved with helping others get into the life-changing experience of endurance sports, coaching local cycling classes and serving as an active board leader of a local triathlon club in our Utah community, and have most recently served as a race guide and push/assist partner for young para-athletes.

hope you enjoy this one as much  as I did.
