  1. McEnroe was right. I don’t know why these announcers seemed to think that it was ok that the umpire was incompetent. They knew that ball was in. They said it on television, but apparently would never had had the guts to say it to his face. After all these years, I don’t even know who won that game or match. No one cares who won, but everyone knows that players stopped putting up with incompetent officials.

  2. the majority of tennis freak-outs I've seen, I tend to side with the player. Tends to be the biggest game of their life, its understandable to be extremely upset if you felt a call was bad. Not to mention almost always they are still sportsman like to the competitor.

  4. In the recent SHOWTIME documentary, film of that disputed point showed that McEnroes serve was clearly on the line and in. Note also that the Referee overruled the line judge’s award of a penalty point. Obviously the referee considered the line judge call a matter of discretion; but felt McEnroe was justified in arguing with the line judge.

  5. McEnroe is technically the greatest player ever (his reading of the game and his backhand volley has no equal). Add to that his persona (and he was mostly right) and you've got Rock and roll.
Tennis was fun to watch back in those days. It was at the headlines back then who won a Grand Slam title. These days it's mostly about if Djokovic will be able to enter the country because he doesn't wanna jab.
