Fighting began on April 19, 1775, followed by the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The American Patriots were supported by France and to a lesser extent Spain, in a conflict taking place in North America, the Caribbean, and Atlantic Ocean.

Actually the british didn't leave north america and we were forced to war again with england in 1812. The Brits were taking our ships and forcing the sailors to be in the british navy.
We fought the british again in 1812.
My first American ancestor was a Scottish soldier who fought under General Burgoyne. He was taken prisoner and given the opportunity to fight for the colonies or head back to the UK. He stayed and fought the British.

Brothers and sisters across the pond have our backs and we yours. 09-11, actually 09-13, when the Queen broke 600 years of tradition and had the National Anthem played at the changing of the guard, not only put tears in my eyes but made a lot of us know or reminded us that we were not alone and our friends had our backs. I will never forget that feeling

Benedict Arnold is so hated and well known in America, his name was literally used as a slang word for traitor. Its getting pretty uncommon now but you can still see it from time to time.
To this day in America to be called a Benedict Arnold is considered to be a true insult

The fighting in the southern colonies with Cornwallis and Banastre Tarleton is what the American movie 'The Patriot' is based off of. Banastre Tarleton's character was killed at the end of the movie but he actually survived the war and died in 1833.
